Spiral of Life by Kickie Chudikova

To celebrate the newly installed public sculpture, Spiral of Life, NYCxDESIGN introduces the “Spiral Goes Viral” (#spiralgoesviral) social campaign, calling on our design-minded audience and DUMBO visitors alike to visit the adaptive seating installation and capture photos of the bench throughout the summer. Kickie Chudikova’s Spiral of Life installation, a project by NYCxDESIGN brought to life with Caesarstone, is now on view at DUMBO’s Pedestrian Plaza at Old Fulton Street and Water Street! 

Drawing inspiration from the waves of the Hudson River and the sculptures of Isamu Noguchi, Spiral of Life is an adaptive installation that offers a place to sit, contemplate, and re-energize while enjoying the impressive Dumbo vistas. Using Caesarstone's outdoor collection as the primary fabrication resource, the bench consists of waterjet-cut stone pieces connected by a metal structure, forming an organic shape.

We are excited to share this stunning design with the world, and look forward to seeing how DUMBO visitors engage with the bench in the months ahead.

The introduction of Caesarstone’s quartz Outdoor Collection surfaces allowed designer Kickie Chudikova to consider the material outside of its traditional use in kitchen settings, and showcase a unique transformation of public space. With Caesarstone’s new Outdoor Collection, this project, says Kickie, gave her “an opportunity to work with quartz in a new and exciting way without the fear of discoloration and staining.” Spiral of Life is more than a bench, it is an art form that expresses a designer’s limitless creative potential when given the opportunity for innovative new applications of materials.

While conceiving the Spiral of Life design, Kickie was excited to work with Caesarstone "because it allows designers to be as imaginative as possible due to its durability, nature-inspired appearance, and versatility."
